Sustainable development and social responsibility are central to ESSEC’s mission

Since its creation, ESSEC Business School has supported equal opportunity, diversity, and environmental responsibility, while striving to have a positive impact on local communities. Our commitment to training responsible managers is evident every day, and unites and inspires the ESSEC community as a whole.

As a pioneer in offering an apprenticeship program, opening its doors to women, or launching an equal opportunities program, ESSEC created Antropia in 2005, the first social incubator in France. More recently, the School has also launched several research Chairs on themes closely related to sustainable development and responsibility such as the Real Estate and Sustainable Development Chair, the Leadership and Diversity Chair, the Therapeutic Innovation Chair, the Complexity Chair, and the Philanthropy Chair.

Furthermore, through its Center of Excellence for Management and Society, ESSEC embraces the Globally Responsible Leadership Initiative’s (GRLI) founding principle--Management Education FOR the World and its call for a radical transformation of management education, expressed through its 50+20 project during the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development in 2012. This project asks fundamental questions if the leaders of tomorrow are to address critical environmental, societal, and economic challenges.

How can we question the dominant economic logic? What should be the aim of business? What is responsible leadership? These are some of the questions students should be learning to ask. At ESSEC, this means designing programs that encourage open mindedness and responsibility, immersing students in an international environment, and familiarizing them with innovative companies as well as charitable organizations. Our goal is to give students a global vision, enrich their understanding of the world, and stimulate their desire to create positive change.

Many ESSEC initiatives are at the core of this process:

  • The Center of Excellence for Management & Society (CEMAS): Committed to ethics and social responsibility, the CEMAS is an ESSEC initiative, launched in September 2014, which federates reflections and actions to place management at the service of humanity, the common good and sustainability. Other Centers of Excellence are also involved in Sustainable Development and Social responsibility.
  • RSE [email protected]: Through many working groups, this initiative defines and shares the good practices across ESSEC many campuses and to its students, staff, professors, alumni, participants, visitors...
